Vaastu and Solar Radiation

Vaastu and Solar Radiation

The Sun is, in a way, the source of all life on Earth. It gives light and heat. Solar radiation is made up of visible spectrum as well as ultraviolet and infrared radiation. In Vaastu and astrology the Sun is the Lord of the bones, eyes, heart, spinal cod, blood circulation and the soul of human beings. Vaastu defines East as belonging to Lord Indra(one of the many Hindu Gods, king of Gods) and is an auspicious direction from which the Sun rises. The North is another auspicious direction favoured by Vaastu since magnetic lines of force run from North to South. While sunlight is essential to good health, excessive exposure to solar radiation can cause health problems. The Earth is constantly bombarded by cosmic energy and solar winds at a speed of 24000 Km/hour.

In a tropical country like India, the south and south east side of a house receives maximum solar radiation and can heat up excessively while the north, north west and north east are in the shadow and remain relatively cool. A thermal imbalance is set up, impeding the flow of energy in and around the house. Consulting a vaastu expert helps resolve the issue and bring about a balance. This is achieved by having thicker walls for the south walls, avoiding slopes on the south, keeping open spaces to the north and raising the plinth of the house in the south. Trees in the south side also help bring about balance. Vaastu is much more detailed than these generalizations. The Sun is represented by the element of Fire in Vaastu and just as fire can be a friend and helpful, it can also be an enemy and harmful. Consider the way solar radiation in excess can harm human beings:

Skin: Solar radiation has Ultraviolet rays that can cause irreversible skin changes, even cancer in extreme cases. UV radiation damages fibrous tissues and accelerates ageing.

Eye: UV part of solar radiation leads to photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis in humans. While these two are short term and reversible, long term squamous cell cancer is difficult and cataracts result in blindness. Extremely bright sunlight also damages eyesight.

Immune System: UV component of sunlight alters the immune system in humans and increases the risk of infection.

Heat Strokes: Especially in the tropics prolonged exposure to sun’s heat can lead to strokes that can sometimes be extremely serious.

Conversely, moderate exposure to sunlight has beneficial effects on mental and physical health of a person.

Beyond the physical effects on humans, the Sun also has a deeper influence on a person’s psyche and his life. Vaastu recognizes the importance of the Sun and has defined methods to avoid the harsh effects of the Sun and minimize its impacts on health and mental peace and well being. Vaastu integrates the five key elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space in harmonious arrangements.

While the World Health Organization and other organizations have only in the past century given importance to the effects of sunlight on humans, Vaastu had, thousands of years before, realized its benefic as well as malefic powers and laid out guidelines to harness the power of the Sun for good purposes and avoid its harmful effects.
