Vedic astrology and Vaastu Shastra originated in ancient India. Some people equate astrology with vaastu Shastra whereas the two are distinct disciplines.
Indian astrology or Vedic astrology goes back several thousand years. The destiny of an individual is pre-determined by the position of the Sun, the Moon and the five planets along with two nodal points known as Rahu and Ketu at the time of his birth. Factors considered while preparing his natal chart are: place of birth and time of birth based on which one knows the precise position of the planets. In addition to planets the constellations too have a role in Indian astrology. The movement of planets and constellations is computed and these have an influence on the life path of an individual. Expert astrologers are able to predict well in advance the life pattern of an individual based on his astrological chart. Astrologers are also able to predict the health, wealth, marriage, career, friends, enemies, diseases and other occurrences in an individual’s life on a study of his chart. Vedic or Indian astrology uses a different method of zodiacal computations and is different in some respects from western style of astrology.
Vaastu again traces its origins to India several thousands of years ago. Sthapatya Veda, a part of Atharva Veda extensively details Vaastu. Vaastu shastra goes to great lengths in precisely detailing each aspect of construction of a structure, whether it is a temple, a palace or a home. Ancient Indian texts like Matsya Purana, Skanda Purrana, Agni Purana, Garuda Purana and Vishnu Purana mention Vaastu Shastra. Vaastu is a vast accumulation of construction principles encompassing science, art, astronomy and even astrology. It can also be termed as a way of life. Vaastu shastra mainly focuses on harmonizing the five basic elements of nature like fire, water, earth, space and air. Harmonizing these elements with respect to an individual’s astrological make up, the country and location where he plans to build a house and even going into great details about each element of the house and its placement are discussed and laid out in detail in Vaastu Shastra. Vaastu means abode. By harmonizing the five elements and direction with the house that itself is said to have its own character and personality and then matching it with the owner, the result is an abode that gives health, longevity, prosperity, peace and happiness to the owner. It is about life and living spaces and living harmoniously and in tune not only with nature but also with one’s self.
Astrology has a narrow focus and sometimes is speculative about the effects of conjunctions of stars and constellations and their transits in the life path of an individual. By using gemstones and performing certain rituals the malefic effects of stars or planets and ensuing hard times in a person’s life can be made bearable or avoided but astrology does not address the key issues of an individual’s life: his day to day life and his relation with the environment and his family that affect his state of mind and his capabilities to grow. On the other hand Vaastu shastra factors in all possible elements that affect a person’s core life and everything else around him. Interestingly enough, the very five elements that surround him viz. fire, air, water, earth and space, are also contained within him. Harmonizing the inside with the outside results in balance and that is what vaastu is about and should not be confused with astrology that simply is a way to know what the future holds in store for a person.
Vaastu defines and matches a house to suit an individual. It is like a tailor custom fitting a client with the best cut suit made of fabric and design stitched to suits his client’s personality to make him feel comfortable not only with the suit that sits on him but also from within.
