There is always a damru, or a divine drums attached to the Trishul of the lord Shiva. Trishul is a tool of destruction, while damru is the sources of creativity. Trishul stands for the protection of dharma, while damru stands for karma, generation. Even when he is dancing he holds the damru in his upper right hand. A damru is a tiny double sided drum- like musical instrument. It gives out dense rhythm as compared to its little form. It is said that the great lord drummed fourteen times, which resulted in roaring thunderstorms. Out of these thunderstorms, the universe was created. The drums created the sounds of ‘aa’,’ii’ ‘uu’, and ‘m' which together forms the initial aum which is the alpha sonic sound. These were the original alphabets of devnagri script. Thus, it led to the foundation of devnagri script. Not only devnagri but Latin A, Alpha of Greek and Aleef of Arab all have the Around as the beginning sound to their script. Shiva still holds the damru in his hands lest-the universe lost its script.
Damru represents enjoyment and recreations. Damru is the rue symbol of infinitely and timelessness. The universe is constantly abounding and crumpling in an endless process.
The dance is incomplete without the music. Shiva is a universal dancer. However, the universal music or the rhythm for the cosmic dance comes from the damru. Shiva dancing with damru also shows that he is complete in himself. He is well equipped with producing music as well as dance to it all at the sametime. It shows his absolute nature.
One time, Hanuman, the reincarnation of the lord Shiva, disguised himself as a normal monkey and Nandi as a monkey dancer. Nandi took the little monkey to Ayodhya, where Sri Ram resided with his three brothers. Seeing the monkey the four brothers wished to see the dance. Nandi tried his best, but it was not his character to make his lord dance this command. Ram then took hold if the string and played the damru in an attempt to make the monkey dance. 'Twas such an amazing rhythm that not only the monkey but the universe danced to the music. Shiva was being enchanted by his one lord, who played Shiva’s instrument better than himself.
The damru awakens the devotees from deep sleep of ignorance. It fills them with conscious Awakenings and gives them motivation to live a better life. It so happened that one-day the lord Shani, after being locked up in his dark glumly, world of hatefulness and self-doubt came to Shiva in search of wisdom and relaxation. Shiva explained that lord Shani's duties were such that he was disliked by the masses. Even so, Shani dev respected and honored his job and never faltered from making correct judgement. His soothing words and honest appreciation removed all doubts yet he was not relaxed. Shiva then played his damru to calm Shani dev. The rhythms not only provided the much-needed alleviation-but it also generated brand new vigor and excitement within Shani dev's mind, and he started his duties with brand new liveliness such is the magic if damru.
