1. Krishna stories have always enticed me right from childhood. It has been a great inspiration for me. Today, I recite the incident of the lifting of the Govardhan which changed the face of the people living in Vrindavan 5000 years ago. Krishna was a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu who had taken birth tohelp people wash off their sins; understand their moral responsibilities towards their fellowmen and also to protect the good in this world. The lifting of the Govardhangiri by Krishna is one of the many true living examples of how Krishna’s life was an inspiration for millions.
2. Vrindavan was always covered with greenery all around because it achieved ample rain throughout the year which in turn filled it with greenery and healthy vegetation. As a token of thankfulness ad gratitude to Lord Indra, the people of Vrindavan every year would perform a special puja for the lord of rain, Indra. When Krishna came to know of it, he opposed and explained that the people of Vrindavan should worship the Govardhangiri which was truly responsible for their prosperity and success. He further said t hat it was the mountain which sent signal to the air for pouring rains on Vrindavan and even provided them with medicines and magical herbs to cure their diseases. More so, it was also responsible for providing healthy green grass to their cattle. Hence, they should worship and pay homage to the mountain and not to Lord Indra.
3. The people of Vrindavan, although worried of the consequences, agreed to Krishna’s words and began preparations for worshipping the mighty mountain Govardhan. The worse, however, was yet to happen. Lord Indra got annoyed and ordered the rains to continuously pour down on Vrindavan. Son the entire village was flooded with water. Krishna requested and consoled the people of Vrindavan not to panic and took them under the shelter of Govardhangiri. He lifted the mountain on his little finger and all the people along with their cattle took resort under the mighty mountains. Seeing this miraculous sight, Lord Indra realized that Krishna was no ordinary human being and apologized for his anger and remorse. The rains stopped, bringing about peace and tranquility in Vrindavan.
4. The inspiration that this incident provides to me and whosoever reading this is that we should not blindly follow and bend in front of anyone out of fear, we should respect and pay homage only to those who actually deserve it from us. Krishna has always taught life’s realities to his disciples and others near him through his actions and life incidents.
