Maa Katyayni is worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri by Hindus throughout the world. She is the sixth manifestation of Maa Durga. The story behind this is there was a pious sage by the name Katyayana who wished to have Goddess Durga as his daughter for which he performed deep penance for years to please God. He was granted the wish after years of meditation and hard penance as Goddess Durga took birth at his home on Dakshin Krishna Chaturdashi. It is for this reason that she was named and known as Katyayani all across the globe. To free the Gods from the torment of the demons under the powers of Mahishasur, the Goddess led the army of Gods and fought the battle for the Gods thereby freeing the world from his evil clutches. She killed Mahishasur and hence is one of the most violent among the nine incarnations of Goddess Durga. However, she is extremely kind when it comes to showing mercy on her devotees and blessing them with whatever they desire.
Maa Katyayani, on the sixth day of Navratri is dressed in a pink saree and a white rosary around her neck. She has a lion in her possession. She has four hands and three eyes. She holds a sword in her upper left hand and a lotus flower in the lower left one. As for her right hand, the upper one remains in Abhaymudra pose and the lower one in Varmudra pose. Unmarried girls worship Maa Katyayani on the sixth day of Navratri to be blessed with a husband of their choice. It is believed that Maa Katyayani blesses those with Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha who worship her with great devotion, dedication, faith and purity of heart, mind, soul.
