2016 Krishna Janmashtami
As the name suggests, it is the day on which Lord Krishna took birth on earth. Many Hindus observe a fast on this day. Those who do so should have a single meal even on the previous day of Janmashtami. On the D-day, devotees vow to observe a fast for the whole day and open it only after the birth of the lord, the next day at midnight when both Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi get over. The Sankalp for the fast is taken in the morning itself.
Krishna puja is performed during Nishitakala which is the midnight as per Vedic time-keeping. A detailed ritualistic puja is performed during the midnight. It involves all the sixteen steps which are a part of Shodashopachara Puja Vidhi.
Rules for fasting on Krishna Janmashtami
• During Janmashtami fasting, no grains should be consumed unless and until the fast is broken on the next day after sunrise. One should follow all norms which are followed for Ekadashi fasting during Janmashtami fasting as well.
• Parana, or the breaking of the fast should be done at the appropriate time. However, for Janmashtami fasting, the Parana is observed on the next day after sunrise when Ashthami tithi and Rohini Nakshatra get over.
• Fasting on Krishna Janmashtami can even continue for two complete days depending on the end timing of Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra. However, devotees who cannot observe the fast for two days may break it the next day after sunrise as per the Hindu religious text Dharmasindhu.
• Krishna Janmashtami is also known by different names like Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, SrikrishnaJayanti and SreeJayanthi.
Many people believe that since Lord Krishna’s mother Devika had to go through extreme pain and suffering in the hands of her brother Kansa behind the bars while giving birth to her eighth son the Lord himself, hence a fast should be observed on this day to commemorate her suffering and then later on celebrate with great pomp when the Lord is born at midnight.
