Basement is quite commonly seen in most houses as they seem to be quite versatile and allow storage space for the inmates. Many use it as a family room too. Converting the basement into a playroom or a personal workshop is also very popular. However, if you believe in Vastu and follow it strictly, basements are not very advisable for you.
As per Vastu Shastra, a basement in a building is not quite approved of as they are considered to contain negative energy that is not fit for dwelling purposes. However, this space can be used for storage or parking. Here are a few guidelines which need to be considered while designing the basement of your new house:
Do not live in the basement:
Basements are dark and ample sunlight cannot perch through. Besides, there is seepage of water from the surrounding earth. Rodents and insects make basement unfit for living as well. All these exert a negative impact on the people dwelling in basements.
If possible, construct basement only below a portion of your house or office. Vastu strictly discourages basements that span the complete building structure. A preferable location for the basement is North or north-east side of the building. That way the basement will receive at least some amount of sunlight. Building it in the South or west will ensure no sunlight entering the basement, thereby making it darker and unfit for inhabitants.
Also, try to keep at least a quarter part of the basement above the ground level. Not only will it receive sunlight that ways, windows can also be put up for better ventilation. It will also keep off rodents and insects.
Shape of the basement:
Design the basement in a manner that it has a uniform shape, either rectangular or square. No other shape should be selected as it would deflect wealth away from the house.
Height of the basement:
Height of the basement should be at least 9 feet. The more the amount of space available in the basement lesser is the negative energy.
Make sure to store heavy equipments towards the South or West of the basement. The south-west corner of a building is usually kept higher than the rest of the structure so as to ward off hot noon sunlight. As a result, it is designed to withstand more load than the rest of the house. Keeping heavy stuffs in this part of the basement will help in better load propagation.
Paint your basement with bright colors. Dark colors should be avoided at all costs since they tend to absorb the light, thereby making the basement dark. White is the most appropriate color for a basement. It accentuates the light and makes the already sunlight-deprived basement space a little brighter. Basements should be constructed with the same care as the other rooms. Just because it gets less used does not make it any less useful. Vastu Shastra can be handy if you wish to make the most out of your structures.
