The second day of Deepawali is celebrated as Narak Chaturdasi or Choti Diwali. On this day too devotees wear new clothes and do puja in their homes in the evening. According to Hindu mythology, it was on this day that the demon Narakasur was killed by Lord Krishna to free the world from all fears. This day is also known as Roop Chaudas and devotees are supposed to massage their body with oil to relieve it from tiredness. They bathe and rest on this day so that the next day of Diwali can be celebrated with great devotion and vigor. Devotees also keep their houses spic and span on this day, use fragrant oils and flowers to imbibe positive vibrations within it. Rice flour and water are used to make Rangolis in artistic patterns to decorate the house and make it vibrant. The threshold of every house is done up with these beautiful Rangolis.
On this day the Yama deeva is not lit. According to Hindu Dharma, the Yama deeva should be lit only on the Trayodasi night along with Prasad. A well educated and learned pandit should be consulted and proper guidance on how to perform the puja paraphernalia for this day. At night, puja is performed by lighting 11 diyas and then these diyas are placed in each room as well as in the backyard of the house.
Choti diwali is next in importance to the main Diwali day which marks the Lakshmi Puja. Hence this day should be celebrated with great care and according to all customs and traditions.
This year, Choti Diwali or Narak Chaudas is going to fall on the 29th of October, 2016
