A prayer is a call of a sub-conscious mind to the Almighty, backed by his belief and intense faith in him, that he would never let anything go wrong with him. When we ask for something in our prayers, like God give me this, give me that, save me and so on, we are actually not seeking God in our prayers, but are seeking security and happiness from him. The ultimate goal of our prayer becomes a quench for well being but we do not accept this fact. The first and foremost step towards effective prayer is to be straight forward with ourselves, only then can we cross the threshold of limitations to true well being.

If we try to analyze and sincerely look at our deepest motivation for religion, we ourselves would realize that we have never aspired for the Divine. The reason being, that our aspiratin was never for the ultimate, it rather was for comfort, wealth, power and materialistic pleasure. God is not a tool to achieve these things, when we seek protection or materialistic benefits in return for our prayers; it is actually our greed and fear that becomes the basis of our prayer.

Truthfully, we have no direct experience of God, it is just a particular belief system that everyone is following since time immemorial. However, thoughts and prayer can open a person, but at the same time, can also create hallucinations for him. Once these hallucinations take over a person and start growing within him, they tend to take on such a big dimension because of the fact that illusion is always more powerful than reality. An illusion has the capability of reaching out to any proportion as it wants to be because it can be exaggerated to any extent, unlike reality. And when the illusionary process gets exaggerated, it becomes more powerful than life. hHence, prayer can not only be misused, but it can also misguide and be deceptive.
